TWO major netball carnivals and the 2015 Developing Northern Australia Conference are expected to reap in $6.4 million for the local economy.

Townsville Enterprise Limited (TEL) and Townsville City Council today announced that the city has secured the 2015 Developing Northern Australia Conference, the 2015 Suzuki Sunshine Netball Carnival, and the 2016 Suzuki Netball State Age Championships.

The events were secured through the Townsville North Queensland Events Bid Fund which was established in July this year.

The events, based on an expected $300 a night spend, will lock up 8440 hotel room nights and inject $6.4 million into the local economy.

TEL’s interim chief executive Patricia O’Callaghan sporting facilities and event capacity “got us into the race” for the events but the fund got them over the line.

“Townsville Enterprise has a continued focus on sports tourism and the acquisition of sporting, entertainment and business events, is key to ensuring we meet our target of doubling visitor expenditure in the region by 2020,” she said…

Developing Northern Australia Conference 2015 is a national conference addressing the economic and social outcomes for Northern Australia. Developing Northern Australia Conference 2015 will be held at Rydges Southbank Townsville on the 20-22 July 2015.
