The 2018 Developing Northern Australia Conference is almost here again and will this year be held at Alice Springs Convention Centre over Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 June.

Cr John Wharton, Mayor of the Richmond Shire Council and Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA) joins us at the Conference to discuss ‘The role of partnerships in developing Northern Australia’.

The infrastructure, services and planning guidance provided by local government support the operation of regional economies and the communities that are sustained by this economic activity.

In turn, the regions significantly support State, Territory and national economies.

The identification and prioritisation of opportunities, and the delivery of these as practical projects and services, across Northern Australia requires a partnership approach.

Collaboration across all levels of government, with the private sector, and most importantly with the communities that live in Northern Australia, is key to identifying and delivering the best support to allow communities and industries to be sustainable and to grow over the long term.

Cr John Wharton AM, Mayor Richmond Shire Council (Q), Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia board member Councillor John Wharton AM was first elected to the Richmond Shire Council in 1991 and became Mayor in 1997. In 2007 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia Award for his service to the community of North-West Queensland through local government, regional development, natural resource management and primary industry organisations. He also received the Centenary Medal for distinguished service to local government. Cr Wharton is a board member of the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia. The CRCNA will oversee the investment of $75m of Commonwealth funds over the next ten years to support industry-led research collaborations. The funding will develop new technologies, products and services which address industry issues in agriculture and food, tropical health service delivery and traditional owner led business development in Northern Australia.
